Senior Cycle Construction Studies
Theory – 50% (Higher Level) 40% (Ordinary Level)
This course is about buildings and "the build environment". In other words, everything from houses, to bridges, to wind turbines. You learn everything from Planning permission right through to the finished product.
Predominantly, students learn about the context in which homes are built, the structure and fabric of buildings as well as the need to ensure homes are suitable for all users for a lifetime of use. It being modern times – thermal efficiencies and ecological footprints of the building are also dealt with in great detail. Students will also develop their ability to communicate ideas and information and to apply accurate observation and scientific investigation through exploring materials and processes.
An ability to sketch is an advantage.
Project – 25% (Higher Level) 30% (Ordinary Level)
The project element is excellent, as it hones in on what the student is interested in and is all encompassing.

- A cross sectional detail of a house/ building structure
- A building research project
- Our heritage buildings
Any project undertaken to be accompanied by a detailed portfolio of work.
The Practical Day exam – 25% (Higher Level) 30% (Ordinary Level)
A four hour exam that is examined in May of 6th Year, tests the ability of the student to carry out the practical skills associated with general woodworking and incorporating the various jointing methods used in furniture making such as bridals/ dovetails/ Mortise and Tenon’s/ Halving joints/ Dowels and screws. It is prepared for in the 6 weeks leading up to the day exam and is very manageable for all ability levels.
Having studied Woodwork at Junior Certificate level is an advantage but is not necessary.

Maths, , Physics (building related science), Art, Design and Communication Graphics, Engineering, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Home Economics (as there is a Home Design elective).
