Chemistry

Leaving Certificate chemistry aims to provide a relevant course for students who will complete their study of chemistry at this level while, at the same time, providing a concrete foundation for those will continue to study chemistry or related subjects following completion of their Leaving Certificate. The syllabus is assessed at Ordinary and Higher levels. The practical/experimental component of the course is examined within the exampaper at the end of Senior Cycle.

Organic Chemistry, environmental chemistry of water, rates of reactions and analytical chemistry are some of the aspects studied in the chemistry syllabus with radioactivity, gas laws and study of the atom overlapping with the Leaving Cert physics syllabus.

Chemistry is innovative, creative, mathematical and applicable to everyday life and continues to be a popular science subject at Castleisland Community College since its introduction to our Senior Cycle curriculum. Students who have studied chemistry have progressed their study of chemistry at third level ,engaging in courses such as Medicine, Pharmacy, General Nursing , Physiotherapy and Engineering. While chemistry may not be a matriculation requirement for some science courses a knowledge of chemistry can assist students in their chosen field at third level.
